Table of Four

Saturday-night session notes and house rules for the old games, played at a dining table.

About this site

Four of us play games most Saturday evenings at a dining table slightly too small for the purpose, under a lamp slightly too dim. We rotate between houses, and whoever has the table provides the tea. The games are old ones: card games our grandparents knew, the tile and dice games of the eighties and nineties, chess and backgammon when only two turn up. We are not competitive, though you would not know it from the scoring arguments.

These are the notes I take afterward, mostly so we remember what we agreed last time. If a rule is written down here, it has been argued over for at least twenty minutes and settled by a vote of four, and I describe the games by what they are rather than by what is printed on the box.
